Here are my Top Tips for saving space in your home-on-wheels!

Be flexible with your storage.

Storage of any kind doesn't need to be permanent. Storage hacks you can add and takeaway increase flexibility. Depending on the type of trip you are taking and the time of year you are exploring, then your storage solutions will probably vary, for example, headrest hooks, storage netting, back-of-the seat hanging storage, packing cubes are always great to allow for flexibility.

Stack things.

Pack things that are stackable or fold flat. Vanlife is like a huge game of Tetris at times, so packing things that stack or fold down flat are fabulous, for example, packing cubes for clothes (as above), smaller packing cubes for wires/cables etc

Collapsible buckets for those beach days with the children, washing up bowls, collapsible water storage bags and a collapsible colander is really useful.

Hang things.

Hang items that you need to access often, for example, coats, backpacks etc on hooks on the back of the headrests. You can never have too many hooks. They keep the floors clear and help you to be ready to go at all times. Did you know that it is even possible to hang your toilet roll in a waterproof toilet roll holder?

Bungee cords.

Use bungee cords to fasten or wrap things together, for example, shoes or electrical cables, or pillows.

Microfibre towels.

They are absorbent, dry quickly and take up very little room - an ideal storage solution in any small living space.

Don't over pack.

It might sound obvious, but camping in the UK does require you to be prepared for every season! However it is easier to take less and wash on site than it is to pack lots of clothing and not have room for it all. Think about the things you do need (e.g. plenty of underwear) and pack layers so you can be ready for all weather. Take roll-up rain macs and all-in-one waterproofs, storing them in wellies.

Make use of all available space.

Be creative with your storage solutions and use all available space. Click here for a video of some space saving ideas. Think about using under-shelf storage, magnetic storage, storage nets and adding additional storage in the doors. Invest in some anti-slip matting, so you can travel with some items on your side without them falling off (non-slip matting is also very useful in shelves and cupboards to stop things sliding around).

Finally make sure all of the adults know where everything is. Vanlife requires teamwork and good communication! By using a few of these space-saving storage ideas, you can make the most of the limited space in your campervan. With a bit of creativity and planning, it’s easy to find clever storage solutions that make life on the road a little simpler.
