WILD Camping PACKING Must Haves

Firstly it is worth noting that organisation, teamwork and good communication are vital to a successful trip!

I have previously written extensively about packing tips for campervan trips. Click below for a printer friendly PDF packing list.

Packing for a wild camping aka informal camping trip can be very different! Below you will find all the best tips and everything you need to know, to help prepare for a wild camping adventure.

1. Invest in some *packing cubes. We have one large cube for each member of the family. Buy either different coloured cubes or make sure to label them so everyone can find their own easily! Rolling clothes instead of folding also means you can fit more in.

2. Pack layers. Leggings, t-shirts, jumpers, thermals etc; all things that need little or no ironing and can simply be washed and dried on-the-go or when you get home. We took waterproofs, extra jumpers, hats, scarves and gloves this time which were well needed.

3. Stick to packing similar colours. I try to pack clothes that are similar in colour. Makes the washing so much easier!

4. Pack a large bag or two that you can use as a *dirty laundry bag or *mesh bag! Helps keep the van organised and tidy.

5. Invest in some *pitsandbitsuk to help make washing on the go easier. *Nilaquapetsuk worked wonders for pets too. Our dog got very stinky but this really helped!

6. Make sure you have plenty of *microfibre towels. They are super lightweight, absorbent and quick drying. They are ideal for use after strip washing or toweling off *pitsandbitsuk

7. Make sure you are well stocked with food. Cooking meals in advance is a huge time saver. Check out Camping Meal Favorites for inspiration and downloadable PDF recipes.

8. Water. It is a key packing item when you are wild camping. As a family of 4 plus dog, we were averaging about 15litres of water per 24hrs. We stored water in x2 jerry vans that were secured to the back of the van.

Things we packed that we didn't need:

  • Chairs. We found we didn't use these. People seemed to arrive much later in the day/evening and people don't sit outside their van in the same way as you would at a campsite.

  • Outside table. We didn't sit outside to eat. Feels a bit strange doing that in a car park or roadside!

Things we were glad we packed:

  • Wellies and walking boots - the girls got their footwear so wet, so regularly, that we needed to alternate them.

  • Waterproofs - much easier to dry these than all your clothes!

  • Hat, scarves, gloves, thermals etc Having these additional items meant we could wrap up and enjoy being outside as much as we could when it was really cold.

  • *Portable shower

  • Extra pairs of socks and thick socks - the girls need to change their socks at least once a day due to them getting wet.

  • *Hand-held hoover - this was used at least three times a day to help keep the campervan clean.

Things we would didn’t have but would pack in future:
